Nation Magazine and Democracy Now Disinformation on Syria

by Stephen Lendman ( – Home – Stephen Lendman)

The publication and broadcaster are part of the self-styled progressive left – its ranks far thinner than claimed.

On key geopolitical issues, their progressivism is more pretense than real. Their funding sources expose them – gotten from George Soros, the Ford Foundation, Carnegie Corporation and other establishment groups.

The Nation disgracefully fronts for undemocratic Dems. During the 2016 presidential campaign, both one-sidedly bashed Trump.

Their editorial policy fails to cross forbidden red lines like 9/11 truth and US aggression in Syria – what true progressives do all the time, no holds-barred.

They belong to the so-called Media Consortium (MC), along with Truthout, Mother Jones, In These Times, Alternet, The American Prospect, the Progressive, and other self-styled progressive left media – sources the late Edward Herman called the “cruise missile left.”

MC receives generous Soros funding. He’s contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to so-called liberal organizations and media through his Open Society Foundations.

They’re mouthpieces for anti-Syria disinformation, backing US aggression instead of condemning it – much like the NYT, Washington Post, CNN, the BBC, NPR, PBS, and other media scoundrels.

Pretending to be on the right side of vital issues makes them effective disinformation disseminators – polar opposite what most followers believe, deceived instead of informed.

On February 23, Nation magazine headlined “Stop the Slaughter in Syria’s Eastern Ghouta.”

Its sources included the UK-based, Western funded, anti-Assad Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) and Syrian American Medical Society – propaganda mouthpieces for US-led aggression in Syria.

The Nation blamed Syrian and allied forces for atrocities and other high crimes committed by US-supported terrorists.

Like other media scoundrels, it called US-led aggression “civil war.” There’s nothing civil about it.

The Nation: “Despite all the carnage, there are still voices in the Syrian government media defending this brutal military campaign against civilians, which has been aided by Russian air forces.”

Fact: US terror-bombing massacred civilians in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, and earlier in Libya, still ongoing in Syria and other US war theaters – ignored by the Nation.

Fact: Syrian and Russian aerial operations scrupulously try minimizing civilian casualties, striking known jihadist locations.

The Nation: “Syrian state TV is claiming that videos of children being rescued from the rubbles are fake, staged somewhere outside the country in order to strengthen demands for regime change.”

Fact: So-called rescue operations by White Helmets indeed are fake, the Western-supported group connected to al-Qaeda – used for anti-Assad propaganda, unrelated to “civil defense.”

The Nation calling Eastern Ghouta a “rebel-held” enclave turned truth on its head. Responsible groups are US-supported terrorists, cutthroat killers, unexplained by the publication.

The Nation: “The Syrian and Russian governments have been dropping leaflets on Ghouta instructing the civilians to leave via ‘safe corridors’…sole(ly) to validate the government’s attacks on civilians.”

A bald-faced lie! So is accusing Syria of “atrocities.” The articles and others like it read like Pentagon or CIA press releases, polar opposite legitimate journalism – absent in Nation magazine on Syria and other major geopolitical issues.

The same goes for Democracy Now. Host Amy Goodman earns 7-figure pay for supporting US imperial lawlessness – in Syria, earlier in Libya and elsewhere.

A recent program disgracefully called for regime change in Syria. Goodman blamed government aerial operations for civilians killed by US-supported terrorists.

She lied claiming Syrian warplanes bombed “hospitals and residential apartment buildings.”

She quoted notoriously anti-Assad former Jordanian UN envoy prince Zeid bin Ra’ad Zeid al-Hussein/current anti-human rights/UN High Commissioner for Human Rights’ spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani.

She turned truth on its head about war in Syria, calling it “a monstrous (government-sponsored) campaign of annihilation of Eastern Ghouta with no regard for civilian lives.”

Three guests on the program one-sidedly blamed Assad for high crimes committed by US-supported terrorists.

Information on daily US-led terror-bombing was suppressed. Nothing about Obama’s aggression on Syria, escalated by Trump – NATO, Israel and other regional rogue states involved.

Syria and its people are victims of US-sponsored aggression – nothing explaining it, the program and others like it devoted to disinformation, Big Lies and fake news, most viewers unaware they’ve been willfully deceived.

Much of the self-styled progressive left is on the wrong side of major geopolitical issues – notably US naked aggression against Syria and other countries.

Americans, others in Europe and elsewhere relying on them for real news, information and analysis are disgracefully betrayed.

The only way to stay informed is by following legitimate alternate media sources, not fake ones, not pretenders.

They’re easy to find online with minimal effort.
