Environmentally Destructive Dakota Access Pipeline Construction Party Halted
by Stephen Lendman
A previous article discussed Native American Standing Rock Sioux people asking for injunctive relief to halt environmentally destructive Dakota Access Pipeline construction on their sacred land.
On Friday, a joint departments of the Army, Justice and Interior statement said construction bordering or under Lake Oahe won’t go forward.
It asked pipeline builder Energy Transfer Partners to cease construction 20 miles east and west of the lake while government authorities reconsider their “previous decisions.”
The Standing Rock Souix people’s case “highlight(s) the need for a serious discussion with respect to considering tribes’ views on these types of infrastructure projects,” the statement added.
Tribe chairman Dave Archambault II called Washington’s announcement “a beautiful start” toward respecting the Sioux people’s rights even though things are far from resolved.
“A public policy win is a lot stronger than a judicial” one, he added. “Our message is heard” and being considered.
Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein and her running mate Ajamu Baraka face prosecution for trespass and criminal mischief for standing in solidarity with the Sioux people’s struggle – for spray-painting messages on a bulldozer destroying hallowed ground.
Their attorneys are arranging a court date after they were served with an arrest warrant. On Thursday, Stein called it inappropriate “for a citizen of the planet to stand by while sacred sites were being desecrated, while protectors of the water had vicious dogs loosed upon them, attack dogs, (and were) pepper-sprayed in the face.”
“And, people who were protecting their water supply, our water supply and a climate that is teetering on the brink” are being grievously abused.
“(I)t would have been inappropriate for me not to have done my small part to support the incredible courage and sacrifice that’s going on right now at the Standing Rock Sioux.”
Voters nationwide are “clamoring for solutions that are transformative, that address the crisis of our economy, our climate, the expanding wars and the corruption of our democracy.”
She hopes her campaign with Baraka and other Green Party candidates will help “prevent further expansion of (imperial) wars, (including) potential nuclear war,” and other US destructive policies harming millions to benefit privileged few.
A longtime internal medicine physician/activist, she calls herself a “medical doctor looking at a nation on life support, democracy on life support, a budget that is going bankrupt, a generation that (has no) future, a climate that’s melting down.”
None of these issues are being addressed. They fester and worsen over time heading toward disaster.
Stein and Baraka may be fined, even imprisoned for supporting right over wrong. US police state viciousness works this way.
