Trump Picks Ambassadors to NATO and Russia
by Stephen Lendman
According to an unnamed White House official, hawkish Russophobe Richard Grennell will be appointed US ambassador to NATO.
Part of Washington’s neocon lunatic fringe, he’s a former Bush/Cheney administration spokesman for its UN envoy, involved with global war on terror communications and other propaganda.
He’s a Fox News guest commentator and contributor to right-wing broadsheets. He was Mitt Romney’s foreign policy spokesman during his 2012 presidential campaign.
He supports heavily arming US-installed Kiev putschists, enabling them to continue fighting terror-war on their own people.
He urged Obama to “leave military action (against Russia) on the table.” He’ll join other hawkish administration members, wanting longstanding adversarial relations with Russia maintained.
On Wednesday, Politico said “(f)ormer Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. has been offered the job of U.S. ambassador to Russia and is in the process of submitting paperwork to accept the position, two administration sources have confirmed.”
He’s chairman of Huntsman Corporation, a multinational chemical products company founded by his father.
His public career dates from the Reagan Administration as a White House staff assistant – later appointed Deputy Assistant Commerce Secretary and US ambassador to Singapore by GHW Bush, Deputy Trade Representative for GW Bush, and ambassador to China for Obama.
He served as Utah governor from January 2005 – August 2009 before joining the Obama administration. In 2012, his presidential campaign was short-lived, announced in mid-2011, ended after finishing third in the New Hampshire primary.
He calls himself a center-right conservative, endorsed Trump’s campaign, saying he “has the ability to assemble a nontraditional bloc of supporters.”
It’s unclear where he stands on Russia. Asked about his likely appointment, Putin spokesman said “(w)e would welcome any head of the US embassy in Moscow who will be strongly committed to the idea of a dialogue with Moscow.”
Chairman of Russia’s upper house Federation Council International Affairs Committee Alexey Pushkov raised concerns about his Atlantic Council chairmanship, a hawkish Russophobic think tank.
Pushkov called him part of a group “where tough criticism of Russia has become a norm. (He’s) definitely not a dove.”
