Deepening US Hostility Toward Russia

by Stephen Lendman ( – Home – Stephen Lendman)

Deplorable US hostility toward Russia keeps worsening, likely to continue deteriorating – risking possible nuclear war if the madness doesn’t stop.

In early August, Putin announced the expulsion of 755 US embassy and consular staff. Their numbers were reduced to match Russian personnel in America.

He acted to “fight back against American unlawful acts” – coming months after Obama expelled 35 Russian diplomats, along with seizing Russian compounds in New York and Maryland.

Retaliating on Thursday, Washington ordered closure of Russia’s San Francisco consulate, along with two annex buildings in Washington and New York – effective September 2.

Instead of responsibly stepping back from the brink, seeking ways to improve relations, Trump chose to intensify hostile relations, acting irresponsibly – yielding to hawkish generals in charge of geopolitical policies, along with neocons infesting his administration.

His action was inexcusable. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert’s remarks weren’t soothing, saying in part:

Putin’s decision “to reduce the the size of our mission in Russia…was unwarranted.” Ordered closures of Russian diplomatic properties were done “(i)n the spirit of parity…”

“The United States hopes that…we can avoid further retaliatory actions by both sides and move forward to achieve…improved relations between our two countries and increased cooperation on areas of mutual concern. The United States is prepared to take further action as necessary and as warranted.”

Not a word from Nauert about fabricated claims alleging Russian US election hacking. Nothing about multiple rounds of illegal US sanctions.

Silence about Obama’s year end 2016 unwarranted expulsion of Russian diplomats and seizure of its property in America. Not a word about wrongfully blaming Russia and other countries for its high crimes.

US/Russia relations are on a dangerous downward trajectory. Their agendas are world’s apart. Russia pursues world peace, stability, mutual cooperation among all nations, and multi-world polarity.

America seeks unchallenged global dominance, wars of aggression and color revolutions its main strategies.

Talks between both countries accomplish nothing. Russia’s word is its bond. America breaches all agreements it makes.

Hoped for better bilateral relations were dashed by congressional and administration Russophobes. Nothing in prospect suggests improvement.
