Covert Israeli Raid in Syria to Foil an ISIS Plot?
by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org – Home – Stephen Lendman)
According to Vanity Fair, citing unnamed experts on Israeli intelligence, a month after Trump’s inauguration, “two Israeli Sikorsky CH-53 helicopters flew low across Jordan and then, staying under the radar, veered north toward the twisting ribbon of shadows that was the Euphrates River.”
On board…were…elite counterintelligence…commandos…along with…Mossad” operatives.
Their alleged target was an “ISIS cell,” working on “transforming laptop computers into bombs, (able to) pass undetected through airport security.”
Operational details reported were contradictory. One unnamed source said the room where ISIS cell members met was bugged with a microphone too tiny to be noticed.
Another source claimed ISIS telecommunications were intercepted so conversations could be monitored.
Trump reportedly informed Russia of the alleged operation without first notifying Israel. Its officials assume Iran was briefed.
Obama officials warned Israel against transferring intelligence information to Trump’s White House and National Security Council, saying it might be passed on to Russia.
Whatever Trump told Putin he likely already knew. Russian intelligence is state-of-the-art.
Alleged Israeli intelligence information may have come from Jordan, according to an Al Jazeera report, citing Jordanian sources. Israeli information comes from shared intelligence “with Arab spy services partners,” it said.
Israel relies on electronic surveillance. Jordan uses human intelligence, spies infiltrating monitored groups.
Israel’s alleged infiltration of ISIS, foiling a plot to transform laptops into bombs, ignores what’s most important.
Like Washington, its regime supports the terrorist group, along with others in Syria, supplying them with weapons and munitions, treating their wounded wounded fighters in field hospitals.
Why would ISIS bite the hands feeding it? Or US ones providing its fighters with material support? So-called Israeli intelligence information passed to Vanity Fair sounds invented.
If its commandos and Mossad operatives entered Syria covertly, it likely was about aiding ISIS and other takfiri terrorists, not an attempt to foil their plots.
Israel used Vanity Fair, likely to make Trump think twice about sharing any information with Russia. It’s so-called “exclusive” read like Israeli manipulation, not a covert operation against ISIS – its ally, not adversary.
