100+ Media Scoundrels Defend Fake News

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.orgHome – Stephen Lendman)

The Boston Globe editorial board called on US broadsheets nationwide to publish August 16 editorials against what it called Trump’s “dirty war on the free press,” adding:

“Publications, whatever their politics, could make a powerful statement by standing together in the common defense of their profession and the vital role it plays in government for and by the people.”

Deputy Globe editorial page editor Marjorie Pritchard said over 100 broadsheet agreed to publish anti-Trump August 16 editorials.

The initiative is supported by the  American Society of News Editors, the New England Newspaper and Press Association, as well as other groups.

Pritchard is right about one thing – the “importance of a free and independent press” – what’s absent in America and the West, except for independent alternative media and writers – the only sources for reliable news, information and analysis.

Journalist AJ Liebling long ago said “(t)he press is free only to those who own one.” Major media press freedom in America and the West is a colossal myth.

Mainstream print and electronic media are mouthpieces for wealth, power and privilege, supporting what demands denunciation.

There’s plenty about Trump to criticize. Slamming media scoundrel fake news is justified and necessary – notably reported by major broadsheets and what passes for so-called television “news,” US cable channels worst of all, an abomination everyone should tune out and ignore.

The entire US and Western major media establishment defiles what legitimate journalism is supposed to be.

Trump is right calling them “the enemy of the people.” They’re a national and international disgrace. Pro-Western UN human rights commissioner Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein turned truth on its head, calling legitimate major media criticism “close to incitement to violence.”

Media scoundrels in America and other Western countries support the worst kind of violence – mass slaughter and destruction from endless US-led wars of aggression against nations threatening no one.

Earlier this month, Trump asked: “Whatever happened to the free press? Whatever happened to honest reporting?”

It’s nonexistent in the mainstream – available only from alternative sources, mainly online. That’s why it’s under assault, a Facebook, Twitter, Google et al censorship campaign to silence dissent.

Abolishing Net Neutrality by the Trump regime to give telecommunications and cable giants power to charge more for greater profits and exert more control over content gravely threatens the last frontier of digital democracy.

Why aren’t 100+ major media broadsheet editorial boards rallying against this First Amendment abuse? Why are they silent about it – defending the rubbish they put out daily?

Failure to vigorously challenge attacks on speech and press freedoms support the abuse through silence – showing media scoundrels are enemies of these most fundamental of all rights.

They prove it daily with disgraceful content, supporting wrong over right, suppressing what’s most vital to know.

They’re complicit in America’s deplorable state, its war on humanity, its rage for total control over planet earth, the human cost of no consequence.
