Defending Venezuelan Sovereignty
by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org – Home – Stephen Lendman)
Dire economic and financial conditions in the country were made in the USA, not Caracas. Bipartisan US dark forces and their media echo chamber falsely claim otherwise.
On Friday January 10, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro will be sworn in for another six-year term. Last May, he was overwhelmingly re-elected by a two-thirds majority, a far greater margin than predicted.
Scores of international observers from 30 countries monitored the election, judging it open, free and fair. Venezuela’s political process is the world’s best.
It’s polar opposite America’s money-controlled system, ordinary people having no say over how they’re governed. Elections when held are farcical. Dirty business as usual always wins.
Governance is of, by, and for the privileged few alone – democracy pure fantasy, not real. Hypocrisy, plutocracy, and kleptocracy defines how the US is run, an increasingly totalitarian rogue state.
Ahead of Maduro’s Friday inauguration, the neocon/CIA house organ Washington Post falsely blamed him for years of US bipartisan political, economic, financial, and sanctions war, aiming to replace Bolivarian social democracy with fascist tyranny.
WaPo disgracefully lied claiming “President Maduro orchestrated a fraudulent reelection,” aided by “Cuba…Russia and China.”
The broadsheet cited US-controlled Lima Group countries, turning truth on its head, calling Maduro’s presidency illegitimate, their remarks drafted by Trump regime hardliners.
WaPo lied accusing Maduro of “employ(ing) crude repression” – a US, NATO, Israeli specialty, not how the Bolivarian Republic operates.
US sanctions war and other harsh measures on Venezuela are flagrantly illegal. WaPo barely stopped short of calling for a coup d’etat to topple Maduro, an action it clearly supports.
On January 7, around 600 intellectuals, scholars, peace and social justice activists, artists, lawyers, religious figures, and Social Movements in Defense of Humanity called for “peoples of the world to defend the sovereignty of Venezuela,” saying the following:
On May 20, Nicolas Maduro was legitimately reelected Venezuela’s president, his margin of victory overwhelming, triumphing decisively over opposition figures.
“The election took place in a climate of peace and tranquility,” practically no irregularities reported.
“The electoral result and the democratic response of the Venezuelan people (showed a popular will) to continue a path of democratic construction as their destiny.”
For years, Republicans and Dems implemented policies aimed at “destabiliz(ing) (and) overthrow(ing) a democratic elected government through an electoral system that even former US President Jimmy Carter described as the best in the world.”
Washington’s “attitude of regime change systematically violates the sovereignty and self-determination of the Venezuelan people” – a flagrant violation of international, constitutional, and US statute laws.
In March 2015, the Obama regime turned truth on its head by executive order, falsely declaring Venezuela an “unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States,” declaring a ‘national emergency’ in order to confront” a nonexistent threat.
In August 2017, the Trump regime’s Treasury Department imposed what it called “irreversible” (flagrantly illegal) sanctions on Venezuela, targeting its economy and financial system.
US major media march in lockstep with Washington’s imperial policies, sharing culpability for supporting high crimes against other nations.
Longstanding GOP and Dem policies call for overthrowing all sovereign independent governments, wanting pro-Western vassal rule replacing them – by naked aggression if other strategies and tactics fail.
The Trump regime, along with colonized partners in Europe and elsewhere “are preparing to ignore the legitimacy of the mandate conferred on President Nicolas Maduro Moros as of January 10.”
“Given this fact, we call upon the people of the United States and the international community not to intervene, and to recognize and respect the sovereign will of the Venezuelan people, who continue to chart their own path of peace, guided by their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.”
Signatories to the above remarks include Tim Anderson, former US political prisoner Oscar Lopez Rivera, Cindy Sheehan, historian Jane Franklin, US Veterans for Peace president Gerry Condon, Law Professor Emerita Marjorie Cohn, Ajama Baraka, Margaret Flowers, former Project Censored director Peter Phillips, Sarah Flounders, hundreds of others, and numerous organizations for world peace, equity and justice.
Venezuelan governance is severely challenged but not collapsing. The Trump regime aims to push it over the edge – by making its economy scream, another likely coup attempt, or perhaps military action if other methods fail.
That’s what the scourge of imperialism is all about.
