Latest Israeli Attack on Syria Largely Foiled

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.orgHome – Stephen Lendman)

On the phony pretext of an Iranian threat in Syria, Israel partnered in Washington’s undeclared war on the country – raging for almost eight years, no end of it in prospect.

The IDF admitted conducting countless numbers of airstrikes on Syrian targets, Pentagon warplanes doing the same thing. What’s going on is naked aggression against a sovereign state threatening no one – what Western media fail to explain.

Israel’s latest attack came overnight. The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) cited a military source, saying “the Israeli enemy launched land and air strikes…through successive waves of guided missiles,” adding:

“The source added that immediately our air defenses dealt with the situation and intercepted the hostile missiles, downing most of them before reaching their targets.”

The attack was launched from Lebanese airspace, the Galilee and Lake Tiberias, dozens of missiles fired. Syria’s military said Israel failed to achieve its objectives.

An IDF source said the overnight operation was its most extensive attack on Syrian targets, calling them Iranian ones.

A statement said “(w)e have started striking Iranian Quds targets in Syrian territory. We warn the Syrian Armed Forces against attempting to harm Israeli forces or territory.”

The pretext for Israel’s latest aggression may have been a phony claim about a Syrian missile fired at its territory. Moscow earlier warned Israel against continuing attacks on Syrian targets – yet has done nothing directly to deter them.

Downing a few of its aircraft would deliver a clear message, the same one to Washington, the main anti-Syria belligerent.

According to Israeli rules of engagement, it’s OK for its warplanes to attack other nations. They, in turn, are forbidden to respond defensively. International law says otherwise. Self-defense is an inviolable right.

The world community ignores flagrant US, NATO, Israeli high crimes of war and against humanity, nations attacked blamed for actions against them.

The overnight attack partly damaged infrastructure near the Damascus international airport, killing four Syrian soldiers, wounding six others.

According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, Syrian-operated Pantsir and Buk air defense systems repulsed the Israeli attack, downing at least 30 IDF air-to-surface missiles – allegedly targeting weapons and munitions storage sites, along with related targets.

US-led forever war on Syria continues, overnight Israeli aggression the latest incidents. Much more of the same is virtually certain. Russia hasn’t intervened to stop them, what’s vitally needed.
