US Senate Hardliners Threaten Illegal Sanctions on China
On March 26, HR 6405: Chinese Government COVID-19 Accountability Act was introduced in the House.
So far, no action was taken on the measure that calls for Trump and Treasury Secretary Mnuchin to seek COVID-19 related reimbursement from China.
On Tuesday, hardline GOP Senator Lindsey Graham introduced S. 3683: The COVID-19 Accountability Act — “A bill to authorize…sanctions (on) China.”
House and Senate measures are all about wanting Beijing held responsible for the fallout from the Trump regime’s indifference toward public health.
According to Graham, the measure would require Trump to certify to Congress within 60 if Beijing “provided a full and complete accounting to any COVID-19 investigation led by the United States, its allies or UN affiliate such as the World Health Organization.”
It calls for closure of so-called wet markets selling wild animal meat that don’t exist in China.
It also demands release of Hong Kong protesters — ones arrested and jailed for involvement in US orchestrated violence and vandalism.
The House and Senate bills propose illegal sanctions, asset freezes, travel bans, visa revocations, banning Chinese firms from trading on US stock exchanges, and other hostile actions against the state and its enterprises.
China will surely respond in kind if either or both measures are enacted into US law.
Responding to the Graham measure, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian slammed the US for wanting its mishandled response to COVID-19 outbreaks blamed on Beijing.
China’s government has nothing to do with US COVID-19 outbreaks and deaths. Time and again, its blame game tries shifting responsibility for its own unacceptable actions onto others.
China has been widely praised for how it handled the issue domestically, along with for supplying around 150 nations with personal protective equipment and ventilators.
The Trump regime knew of the potential problem in early 2017, but took no actions to prepare in advance.
It bears full responsibility for the public health crisis that continues festering unresolved.
It shares responsibility for economic collapse with its most immediate predecessors and the Wall Street owned and controlled Fed.
Zhao denounced the GOP “Attack China” plot to help Trump’s reelection campaign, as well as Republican congressional members up for reelection and aspirants for House and Senate seats, adding:
US legislation “absolutely neglects facts. (Lawmakers in Washington) want to start (an unacceptable guilt by accusation) investigation…to shift their responsibility for the failure in the fight against the epidemic on China. This is not possible. We express our resolute protest.”
“We suggest certain US politicians not go too deep into the drama and refocus their attention to safeguarding US people’s lives, security and make more of a contribution to global anti-pandemic cooperation.”
On Wednesday, China’s official People’s Daily said widespread COVID-19 outbreaks in the US “revealed the ugly side of some American politicians who are trying to connect a public health emergency with politics,” adding:
“The clumsy tricks attempted by Pompeo and other US officials have held back America in its fight against the virus, undermined international cooperation, and poisoned China-US relations.
They’re heading closer to a breaking point.
If rupture occurs, is confrontation next?
Given Washington’s bipartisan criminal class at war on humanity at home and abroad, anything ahead is possible, no matter how potentially destructive.
A Final Comment
On Wednesday, Sergey Lavrov denounced US accusations against Russia and China as baseless, adding:
The US “and their allies continue to try to stir up confrontation, to use the current situation to impose their point of view, their vision of the future order, which they call the rules-based order.”
“As you know, these are they who invent these rules…There are baseless allegations against the People’s Republic of China and the Russian Federation.”
“They ignore calls for the suspension of unilateral sanctions during the fight against coronavirus infection, sanctions that impede the humanitarian supply of medicines, equipment and food.”
The US is a mortal enemy of peace, cooperative relations with other countries, democratic values, and the rule of law.
Its rage to control planet earth, its resources and populations poses humanity’s greatest threat.
