New Trump Regime Indictment of Assange Expands Phony Charges

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.orgHome – Stephen Lendman)

Targeting Julian Assange by the Trump regime is all about wanting truth-telling journalism the way it should be on vital issues silenced.

It has nothing to do with phony charges in the 18-count indictment only a despot could love.

Police state America targets anyone for any reasons who challenge its war on humanity, wanting them silenced and/or eliminated.

A Trump regime reissued indictment of Assange expands existing phony charges without adding new ones — based on the long ago outdated Espionage Act, a WW I relic belonging in the dustbin of history, not hauled out to charge figures deserving high praise with offenses they didn’t commit.

According to a June 24 Trump regime Justice Department press release, Assange is falsely charged with “conspir(ing) with Anonymous affiliated hackers (and) others,” adding:

Despite no evidence proving it, the DOJ accused Assange and WikiLeaks with “recruit(ing) hackers to commit computer intrusions to benefit WikiLeaks.”

He’s charged with “conspir(ing) with…Chelsea Manning to access classified” war department information.

He faces five to 10 years imprisonment per charge if found guilty — the process rigged to assure he never again sees the light of day as a free man, despite having committed no criminal offenses.

No evidence suggests he illegally hacked into, stole, or otherwise got classified information on his own.

WikiLeaks publishes material supplied by sources believed to be credible, unidentified for their protection.

It’s journalism the way it should be, not an intelligence operation. Nor it it connected to Russia or any other country.

Assange explained that the organization “publish(es) newsworthy content (that’s) confirm(ed) to be true.”

He’s an investigative journalist/whistleblower who was largely targeted for publishing material supplied him by Chelsea Manning, including:

The damning Collateral Murder video, exposing the killing of unarmed Iraqi civilians by a US Apache helicopter crew.

The Afghan War Diary, revealing uninvestigated civilian casualties and private military contractor abuses.

The Iraq War Logs, revealing civilian casualties and uninvestigated reports of torture, and:

US diplomatic cables, explaining corporate interests and espionage in international diplomacy.

Just societies would honor Manning and Assange instead of inflicting cruel and unusual punishments that are banned by the Constitution’s 8th Amendment.

The US has a long disturbing history of honoring its worst and punishing its best.

Dissent is increasingly targeted, fundamental freedoms threatened on the phony pretext of protecting national security at a time when the nation’s only foreign threats are invented, not real.

Activists for peace, equity, justice, and the rule of law, along with truth-telling journalists are threatened by the imperial state.

It’s how police state regimes operate everywhere, defined by Merriam-Webster as “a political unit characterized by repressive governmental control of political, economic, and social life usually by an arbitrary exercise of power by police and especially secret police in place of regular operation of administrative and judicial organs of the government according to publicly known legal procedures.”

The FBI and other US police state agencies are actively involved in infiltrating, disrupting, sabotaging, and destroying activist groups and individuals for civil and human rights, ethnic justice, racial emancipation, and real economic, social, and political equality across gender and color lines — along with wanting an end to US imperial wars on invented enemies.

Truth-telling journalists, whistleblowers, anti-war, and social justice activists are monitored and targeted in similar ways.

The US long ago became unsafe and unfit to live in for activists on the right side of history, people of color, and anyone for positive change over dirty business as usual.

America is only “beautiful” for its privileged class, the vast majority of others exploited, not served.
