IAEA Drops US-Backed Ani-Iran Resolution

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.orgHome – Stephen Lendman)

An Anti-Iran resolution — backed by E 3 countries — sent by the Biden regime to the IAEA board of governors falsely accused Tehran of failing to cooperate with the nuclear watchdog group.

As part of continuing Trump’s maximum pressure on Iran, refusing to lift illegal sanctions and comply with its JCPOA obligations, Biden regime hardliners urged the IAEA to falsely accuse Tehran of failing to fulfill what’s required under Security Council Res. 2231 and JCPOA provisions.

This and similar unacceptable actions by Biden hardliners show its true intentions toward Iran.

By falsely blaming the country’s leadership for its own flagrant JCPOA breaches and unwillingness to reverse them, it’s clear that Biden’s geopolitical team has no intention of fulfilling what was pledged while campaigning.

Russia’s representative to the International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov warned the IAEA against adopting the unacceptable resolution against Iran during a board of governors meeting, saying the following:

The US draft resolution is “highly risky (and) stupid.”

It “can undermine the prospects for a restoration of #JCPOA.” Adoption could cause an “international crisis.”

“(G)ive a chance for diplomacy.”

On Thursday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said the IAEA’s board dropped the hostile Biden regime resolution.

The move came after E 3 countries Britain, France and Germany withdrew support for what they originally supported.

They remain complicit with US maximum pressure on Iran.

On Thursday, Iranian President Rouhani said the IAEA “is not a venue for political games.”

“Political games must be abandoned. The agency is a place for technical work.”

It’s responsible for fulfilling its international law obligations.

On Wednesday, in testimony before Senate Foreign Relations Committee member, Biden’s nominee for deputy secretary of state Wendy Sherman said the following:

“(W)e have to keep sanctions on (Iran) that deal with human rights abuses (sic), state sponsorship of terrorism (sic), arms sales, et cetera (etc).”

“(T)here are many things that need to stay in place.”

The above remarks are further proof of no intention by the Biden regime to fulfill its obligations and engage in good faith diplomacy with Iran.

It shows every intention of continuing endless US war on the country and people by other means for invented reasons.

No legitimate ones exist.

Terrorism and aggression are what the US and its imperial partners do, not Iran.

Defying reality, Sherman falsely accused Iran of “terrorism and (unspecified) other things…(and) other nefarious activities (sic).”

At the same time, she falsely called US engagement with Iran “peaceful diplomacy (sic).”

She strongly suggested that the Biden regime has no intention of fulfilling its JCPOA obligations, saying:

Biden seeks a “longer and stronger” nuclear deal with provisions no responsible Iranian leadership would accept.

Hardliners in charge of Biden’s geopolitical agenda ignored the call by 32 highly respected organizations to “follow through quickly on your commitment to rejoin the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),” adding:

It’s Washington’s obligation to reverse Trump’s flagrant breach of international law by abandoning the JCPOA.

Organizations urging the above include Americans for Peace Now, Historians for Peace and Democracy, Win Without War, Union of Concerned Scientists, and Physicians for Social Responsibility, among others.

On Wednesday, Khatibzadeh said Iran rules out any renegotiation of the JCPOA that’s binding international law under Security Council Res. 2231.

There’s no point in Iran engaging with the US and E 3 diplomatically as long as they persist in making unacceptable demands and only offer hollow promises to be broken.
