Sergey Lavrov on US Unilateral Rules

Sergey Lavrov on US Unilateral Rules

by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org – Home – Stephen Lendman)

At a May 12 joint news conference with subservient to Western interests/UN secretary general Guterres, Lavrov discussed challenges to the rule of law, notably under the UN Charter.

He slammed what he called attempts by the US and other Western nations to “promote unilateral approaches in circumvention of the established collective mechanisms for developing international law-based solutions,” adding:

“We consider developing certain ‘rules’ behind the back of the greater part of the international community and then imposing them on others as universal norms unacceptable and dangerous practice.”

“We are witnessing situational coalitions and partnerships being created outside the UN, which arrogate to themselves the right to speak and act on behalf of everyone else, accompanied by criticism of the UN for its allegedly low efficacy.”

The so-called “rules-based order” promoted by the US and key Western partners breaches fundamental international law in pursuit of their hegemonic aims.

Russia strongly supports and adheres to what’s embodied in the UN Charter and other international law, along with a polycentric world order, and solutions to crises through diplomacy, not belligerence.

This approach is polar opposite how the US, West, and apartheid Israel operate — by their own rules exclusively.

On Israeli state terror against Gaza and throughout the Occupied Territories, Lavrov diverged from his customary straightforwardness as follows, saying:

“We welcomed the beginning of a process for normalizing relations between the Arab countries and Israel as any other progress in relations between the international community members.”

“But, like other countries that observed this process, we emphasized that the normalization of relations between the Arab countries and Israel should not take place at the expense or to the detriment of resolving the Palestinian issue in accordance with the two-state principle enshrined in the UN Security Council resolutions,” adding:

“(D)evelopments (sic) that broke out several days ago are, unfortunately, still underway. People are dying on both sides (sic).”

“(D)evelopments” Lavrov referred to are Israeli aggression against Gaza — preceded and accompanied by state terror in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.

What Lavrov called deaths on “both sides” conceals reality.

Palestinian deaths outnumber Israeli one by about 15 to 1.

The ratio of injuries on both sides is far more lopsided — over 3,300 Palestinians already hurt, many seriously.

According to the Palestine Red Crescent Society on May 15, 1,514 Palestinians were injured in the West Bank, as well as 872 in East Jerusalem — from May 7 — 11.

Around 1,000 others were injured in Gaza, along with over 150 killed throughout the Territories through around midday May 15.

Over two million Gazans are terrorized, many traumatized by

Israeli terror-bombing and shelling.

Instead of condemning what’s going on and demanding that Israel be held fully accountable for crimes of war, against humanity, and slow-motion genocide against Palestinians, Lavrov said the following:

“(W)e have come to a common understanding that convening a Quartet of international mediators, including Russia, the US, the UN and the EU, is the most important task at hand (sic).”

“We put our trust in the (pro-Western, pro-Israel) secretary-general (sic) as the coordinator of the Quartet (sic) to work with the parties and to try to set up this meeting as soon as possible and hold it preferably at the ministerial level.”

Lavrov’s call for “dialogue” among the Quartet, Arab countries, Palestinians and Israel fails to prioritize what’s most needed.

Along with demanding that Israeli aggression stop immediately, it’s essential to hold its culpable political and military officials fully accountable for their high crimes against Palestinians — what Lavrov failed to mention.

Saying Guterres has “experience and diplomatic skills (able to) create a proper environment” to facilitate conflict resolution is expecting what he never achieved before.

His dubious skills approach fail to do more than urge all sides to show restraint — either directly or through his spokesman.

Conditions in Gaza and throughout the Territories are dire for long-suffering Palestinians.

Dire conditions demand drastic measures to address what’s going on.

Palestinians are being massacred, maimed and otherwise harmed — the death and injury toll mounting by the hour.

Vital infrastructure in Gaza is being destroyed, along with residences, other structures, businesses, and normal life.

On Friday, Russia designated the US an “unfriendly state.”

What about apartheid Israel?

It’s an unparalleled regional menace, along with the presence of US occupation forces in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East.
