Toothless Security Council Statement on Gaza

Toothless Security Council Statement on Gaza

by Stephen Lendman ( – Home – Stephen Lendman)

In the aftermath of US/Western support for Israel’s rape and destruction of Gaza — for the 4th time in 13 years — a hollow Security Council statement is an embarrassment to its signatories for failing to condemn Israeli aggression and imposing punishment.

While Israeli terror-bombing and shelling of Gazan residential areas was ongoing, the Biden regime blocked four Security Council statements that mildly criticized Israeli terror-bombing and shelling.

On Saturday, it supported a meaningless — unanimously adopted — after-the-fact one, stating:

Council members “mourned the loss of civilian lives resulting from the violence (sic).”

They didn’t “mourn” enough to stop the carnage and hold Israel fully accountable for its aggression.

They “stressed the immediate need for humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian civilian population, particularly in Gaza (sic).”

Calling for “calm (sic),” the UNSC “reiterated the importance of achieving a comprehensive peace based on the vision of a region where two democratic states, Israel and Palestine, live side by side in peace with secure and recognized borders (sic).”

Over the last half century or longer, how many previous times were statements like the above issued?

How many times did ruthless Israeli regimes ignore them to do what they pleased with impunity?

In the past 73 years to the present day, the US-dominated West has one-sidedly supported the highest of Israeli high crimes — including its slow-motion genocide of long-suffering Palestinians.

At the same time, Western ruling regimes have consistently shown contempt and indifference toward fundamental Palestinian rights as affirmed under international law.

As for vitally needed humanitarian aid and funds needed to rebuild what Israel destroyed, the Biden regime refuses to provide anything directly to raped and destroyed Gaza.

Instead, it’s replenishing Israel’s stockpile of terror weapons to continue oppressing Palestinians without mercy throughout the Occupied Territories.

Israeli war minister Gantz said senior Hamas leaders remain on the Netanyahu regime’s target list for elimination.

According to Gaza’s housing ministry official Naji Sarhan, IDF terror-bombing and shelling destroyed at least 2,000 residential homes — partly or severely damaging over 15,000 others.

Medical and educational facilities, mosques, factories, other businesses, most electrical power, media locations, and government offices were also destroyed or damaged — much of it severely.

According to the UN, about 800,000 Gazans have no access to water after Israel destroyed about half of the Strip’s water network.

Under international law, all of the above are Nuremberg-level war crimes — how Israel has operated since the late 1940s with impunity because of US/Western support.

Ceasefire agreed to on Friday can unravel any time ahead at Israel’s discretion.

It’s virtually guaranteed because that’s how the scourge of Zionist tyranny operates

When small or large-scale conflicts erupt in the Occupied Territories, Israel bears full responsibility for launching them.

Yet time and again, Palestinians are falsely blamed for Israeli high crimes committed against them.

Israeli regimes long ago proved that pound-for-pound, the Jewish state is the most ruthlessly lawless state among the world community of nations.

Daily oppression of Palestinians continues throughout the Occupied Territories — the West, other nations and UN doing nothing to condemn and/or halt it.

On Saturday, protests supportive of Palestinian rights continued in cities worldwide — demands made to impose tough sanctions and a military embargo on Israel.

In downtown Chicago Friday evening, a few miles from where I live, a pro-Palestinian rally was held.

Organized by the Chicago Coalition for Justice in Palestine, a statement by the group said:

“The Palestinian civilian population (continues to be) attacked in Jerusalem and in the West Bank by the Israeli military and police…”

They “have the right to resist and the right to self-defense.”

A Palestinian ex-pat likely spoke for  millions throughout the Occupied Territories, saying:

“We will never give up!”

Ceasefire resolved nothing!

As long as illegal Israeli occupation, land theft, ethnic cleaning, daily oppression, targeted assassinations, and slow-motion genocide of Palestinians continue, their struggle to breathe free on their own land in their own country will go on.
