Violent Israeli Arrest of Palestinian Journalist

Violent Israeli Arrest of Al Jazeera Journalist

Like the US and its Western partners, Israel wants truth-telling about its apartheid tyranny suppressed.

Historical revision is longstanding practice. History books were rewritten, Nakba truth-telling banned.

Israelis are fed a steady diet of sanitized information, including in school to the highest levels.

Academic freedom is prohibited whenever conflicting with the official falsified narrative.

Aggression is called self-defense, massacres portrayed as successful military operations.

Thought control includes cracking down hard on truth-telling Palestinian journalists, activists and others challenging injustice.

Security Council Res. 1738 affirms protection for civilians and journalists in war theaters, demanding accountability for parties breaching international law.

Palestinian journalists covering Israeli violence against legitimate protesters risk serious injury or death for reporting accurately about Israeli state terror.

While reporting on a Palestinian demonstration in East Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, Israeli security forces brutally assaulted and arrested Al Jazeera journalist Givara Budeiri, her cameraman’s equipment confiscated and destroyed.

After release from her ordeal, she explained what happened, saying “(t)hey came from everywhere…kicked me inside the car in a very bad way…kick(ed) me from everywhere.”

Despite wearing a flak jacket clearly marked press and holding a Government Press Office (GPO) card, she was brutalized to inflict pain and suffering for doing her job.

Her hand was broken and wrists injured from handcuffs tightly binding her.

Falsely accused of kicking an Israeli soldier, she debunked the phony charge.

Al Jazeera’s Media Network acting director general Mostefa Souag denounced her brutal mistreatment, saying:

“The systematic targeting of our journalists is in total violation of all international conventions. Today’s violent actions by Israeli occupation forces against Givara Budeiri and Nabil Mazzawi are in total disregard for the fundamental human rights of journalists,” adding:

“The silencing of journalists by terrorizing them has become a routine activity for the Israeli authorities as witnessed in recent weeks in Gaza and occupied Jerusalem.”

Al Jazeera’s Hoda Abdel Hamid spoke to Palestinian witnesses who confirmed what happened, saying:

“(T)hey all said there was no reason for that kind of tension and that it was not clear why they decided to specifically go (after) Givara while there were other journalists doing exactly what she was doing.”

Al Jazeera has video evidence of her violent arrests — posted on its website.

International Press Institute’s Barbara Trionfi witnessed it, saying:

“We have seen a lot of targeted attacks against journalists by Israeli forces throughout the past weeks and months and this is, unfortunately, not an isolated case.”

“This type of behavior by the Israeli forces is absolutely not acceptable.”

It’s “absolutely appalling.”

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) denounced Israel’s “clear violation of press freedom,” adding

Budeiri “was clearly recognizable as she was wearing a press vest, and there is a clear will from the Israeli authorities to prevent journalists from doing their job and from reporting on the ground.”

Since last month alone, over a dozen Palestinian journalists were administratively detained behind bars uncharged and untried.

Despite having committed no offenses, Israel holds them indefinitely.

Last year, the Palestinian Center for Human Rights documented 98 assaults on Palestinian journalists by Israeli security forces, dozens injured, over two dozen arrested — to silence, punish and intimidate them.

On May 15 in Gaza, Israeli terror-bombing turned the 11-story Al-Jalaa building to smoldering rubble — its occupants given one hour to vacate the premises.

Along with residences of Gazan families, the building housed international media offices — including for  DW News, AP News, AFP and Al Jazeera.

Local Palestinian news agencies had offices in the building.

The IDF falselym said the building included Hamas “military assets (sic),” adding:

“(O)ffices of civilian media outlets (were) use(d) (by Hamas) as human shields (sic).”

According to AP News, the Netanyahu regime and IDF “did not provide evidence for the claim” — because there is none.

Committee to Protect Journalists’ executive director Joel Simon denounced what happened, saying:

The “attack on a building long known by Israel to house international media raises the specter that the IDF is deliberately targeting media facilities in order to disrupt coverage of the human suffering in Gaza.”

Last month, the Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) “condemn(ed) the Israeli occupation forces’ targeting of journalists and media institutions in the Gaza Strip since the start of the Israeli aggression…to conceal the crimes committed against civilians.”

MADA documented dozens of injuries to journalists while covering Israeli aggression against Gaza, as well as state terror in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, adding:

“(I)mpunity for the perpetrators of these crimes, and other crimes, has over the years been an incentive for them to continue committing crimes.”

Crimes without punishment assure more of the same, the pattern in Occupied Palestine for decades.

A Final Comment

Budeiri required hospitalization as a result of her order to treat her broken hand and bruises on parts of her body.

“I’m trying to be OK, but they broke my hand and I spent all the night in the hospital,” she said, adding:

She has pain in her back and legs that impede her ability to walk.

She quoted an Israeli security force member, saying “(w)e will make you shut up.”

“If we make Al Jazeera be silent, everyone will shut up.”

She told Al Jazeera that truth-telling journalists are “telling the whole world what’s going on” in Occupied Palestine, adding:

“The microphone and camera will stay…Nothing will stop us.”

On Sunday, a rally in support of Palestinian journalists was held in Ramallah, Al Jazeera saying:

“The feeling here by some of the speakers is that Israel is deliberately targeting those journalists because they are showing the world the reality of what’s happening under occupation.”

“They feel Israel has been losing the media war, because they feel that it’s been exposed – its measures, its violations – and that’s why they’re trying to target journalists to silence them.”

Israel’s brutal mistreatment of Budeiri happens multiple times daily throughout the Occupied Territories — against Palestinians for not being Jews and journalists for exposing Jewish state criminality.
