Russia’s Foreign Ministry on Afghanistan and Other Issues
by Stephen Lendman (stephenlendman.org – Home – Stephen Lendman)
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova (MZ below) explained that while the Taliban control Kabul and other key Afghan cities, elements opposed to their rule control Panjshir province.
US-installed puppet president Ghani surfaced in the UAE — after fleeing with suitcases of stolen cash, Russia reported.
The Taliban expressed willingness to work cooperatively with “influential Afghan political leaders,” MZ explained.
Moscow called for and supports “transition to a nationwide dialogue with the participation of all opposing Afghan forces and ethnic and religious groups in the country.”
It backs formation of “a representative government” that serves the rights and welfare of all Afghans — explained by “the Moscow format.”
Russia’s Kabul embassy established working relations with the Taliban — notably to assure the safety and security of its nationals in the country.
At this time, its consular work is disrupted because the US-installed regime collapsed — an issue to be rectified ahead.
Assistance needed by Russian nationals in the country is being addressed, including transportation home if requested.
MZ stressed that “no one is talking about evacuating the embassy staff or Russian citizens residing in Afghanistan,” adding:
“We have no knowledge or information about any of our citizens being affected as a result of the known events of the past days at the airport in Kabul.”
It’s too early to consider formal relations with the Taliban, including trade and other economic ties.
At the same time, MZ explained that there’s “no reason to believe that they will not receive a boost after the state bodies resume normal operations and calm is restored in Afghan society.”
Because of Biden regime caused chaos, including its botched evacuation of US citizens and Afghans providing services to Washington, MZ said the following:
“(W)e are ready to offer Russian civil aviation services to take any number of Afghan citizens, including women and children, to any countries that show an interest in accepting and accommodating them.”
“As representatives of the new authorities in Afghanistan have assured us, there are no fundamental obstacles to the arrival and departure of Russian aircraft in Kabul.”
“They guarantee the safety of Russian aircraft, crews and passengers.”
Note: Interventionist Blinken and other Biden regime hardliners are pressuring other countries not to recognize the Taliban governance in Afghanistan.
Wanting control regained over the country, US-dominated NATO and imperial partners are likely to go all out to undermine its rule.
Separately, MZ commented on the unacceptable US/NATO military infrastructure buildup near Russia’s borders.
Saying it’s needed to “contain Moscow by force” ignores the absence of foreign threats to the alliance by Russia or other nations.
Its large-scale military exercises and other provocative actions risk pushing things for direct confrontation by accident or design.
MZ expressed concern about Pentagon plans increase numbers of US forces in neighboring Poland from around 4,500 to 20,000.
MZ: This action if taken breaches “the 1997 Founding Act on Mutual Relations, Cooperation and Security between the Russian Federation and” NATO, adding:
US-dominated NATO is also “increas(ing) (provocative) military activity near Russia’s southern borders.”
Nazi-infested “Kiev regularly conducts exercises with aggressive scenarios and involvement of NATO forces, as it continues to modernize its military infrastructure” with likely increased aggression on Donbass in mind.
If US-dominated NATO “continue(s) to undermine the foundations of security on the continent, we will be forced to take the necessary measures to ensure our legitimate national interests, which our country’s leadership has conveyed on many occasions.”
Commenting on the devastating August 14 earthquake in Haiti, killing around 2,000, injuring thousands more, MZ said Russia has no information of harm to its nationals in the country, adding:
Moscow is “accelerating disaster relief” by delivering humanitarian supplies and medicines to parts of the country most affected.
